Selection Process

Review your Qualifications

Once you have submitted your online application, you will immediately get an email confirming that your information was received. Our talent acquisition team reviews your educational background and work experience based on job specific minimum qualifications. If eligible, you will be moved forward for further consideration by the hiring manager.  If your application does not show that you meet the minimum qualifications, a notification will be sent from our system.  Please don’t be discouraged by this as you may be qualified for other positions.

Hiring Manager Review & Interview

If you pass the initial screen, your application will be forwarded to the hiring manager for further consideration.  From that point forward, all communication regarding the status of your application should come from the hiring manager. He or she has the discretion to decide who to interview and, ultimately, to whom to offer the position.

If selected to move forward, the hiring manager will contact you for an initial phone interview or an in-person interview.  Generally, the State of Vermont uses structured behavioral-based interviewing techniques to understand how you approached and learned from past employment-related situations. To prepare, you may find it helpful to reflect on (and write down your key thoughts) about actual examples of situations and work experiences you can speak to during the in-person interview. A variety of general interview resources can be found online (keyword search: “behavioral interviews” or “job interview tips”) and also see Interview Tips.

Pre-Employment Requirements

If you are a finalist for a position, you will be asked to update your application to respond to questions to allow the State of Vermont to perform pre-employment checks, such as criminal history and tax compliance. In addition to these checks and depending on the position you are being considered for, other department-specific background checks may be conducted. The hiring manager will review these with you.

Written Offer

If you pass these, the hiring manager will extend a conditional offer to you that will include start date, job location and compensation details.  You will need to login to your account to accept the offer.

Onboarding

After offer acceptance, you’ll receive information to help you prepare for a successful first day as part of the State of Vermont team! You can also go here for more information on your first day!

Common Questions:

How do I find the status of my application?

Our online application system is designed to keep you informed throughout the hiring process. If you are wondering about the status of a position, please log into your account and scroll to “Jobs Applied.” Expand this section to see the current status of all the jobs you’ve applied for.

What is the time frame for the State’s hiring process?

All permanent, classified job openings are posted for a minimum of 10 business days.  It is common for job openings to be posted for longer periods or to be reposted.  After the application deadline, candidates are usually forwarded to the hiring manager within 1-3 business days.  The time frame to schedule interviews and make an offer depends on the hiring manager and varies widely.
