Overview

Help strengthen Vermont's mental health crisis services and advance a system of care grounded in recovery, resilience, and peer support.


The Vermont Department of Mental Health seeks a collaborative and organized Recovery Support and Crisis Training Manager to lead statewide crisis training and support the integration of peer and recovery services across Vermont's mental health system.


Working under the general supervision of the Crisis Director, you will partner with community organizations, Designated Agencies, peer supporters, police and first responders, and local, regional, and state stakeholders to strengthen services for Vermonters. This position offers the opportunity to combine professional expertise and lived experience to shape training, support providers, and expand recovery-oriented approaches statewide.


Key responsibilities include:
•    Overseeing crisis services training requirements, including the mental health peer certification process, to support compliance with requirements.
•    Coordinating training on topics such as mental health, substance use, de-escalation, available resources, harm reduction, suicide risk assessment, and intentional peer support.
•    Act as the Department training coordinator to provide statewide training.
•    Providing technical assistance, consultation, and training to help provider organizations strengthen peer support programs and recovery-oriented practices.
•    Supporting the expansion of peer services in mobile crisis and community-based settings and the development of Vermont's peer support workforce.
•    Serve as a subject matter expert in the field of peer support and use your lived experience to enhance the role of peer support providers in Vermont's mental health system of care.


Success in this role requires effective communication, strong organizational skills, independent judgment, and the ability to build collaborative relationships. Knowledge of mental health crisis systems, peer and recovery support, program management, and quality improvement will help you guide this work.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed primarily in a standard office setting. Interaction with government staff, representatives of other human service organizations, and families and consumers are frequent and may involve conflict and strong feelings. Tact and diplomacy are needed. In state travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation should be available. Some evening and weekend work and some out-of-state travel may be required on a limited basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree or higher in Clinical Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a closely related field AND one (1) year or more of clinical program experience with people with severe mental illness

OR

Bachelor's degree or higher in clinical social work, psychology, counseling, or a closely related field AND three (3) years or more of clinical program experience with people with severe mental illness.

Note: Must self-identify as an individual with life experience of being diagnosed with mental illness or substance use and be in recovery.
