Overview

The Data & Reporting Coordinator is responsible for monitoring activities required under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 1974, as reauthorized by the Juvenile Justice Reform Act (JJRA) of 2018, which established four core requirements that protect youth. These requirements include deinstutionalization of status offenders (status offenders are juveniles charged with a conduct that would not be a crime if committed by an adult), sight and sound separation between adult inmates and juveniles, removal of juveniles from adult jails and detention facilities, and addressing racial and ethnic disparities within the juvenile justice system. This is based on the broad consensus that youth who encounter the juvenile justice system are incredibly vulnerable and need to be protected.

The position monitors all Vermont facilities where public authorities may hold youth securely (police departments, court holding cells, detention facilities, etc.), to ensure that they are abiding by the above requirements and protecting this vulnerable population. Annually, this coordinator must report the results of these site visits and inspections to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), and work with the Juvenile Justice Coordinator and the State Advisory Group on the development of the State Plan and annual federal solicitation.  This position reports to the FSD Juvenile Justice Specialist and is a member of the Adolescent Services Unit
