Overview

Buildings and General Services at the State of Vermont has an exciting and dynamic opportunity with room for growth as a Central Heat Plant Operator. You will be part of a small group of individuals that would be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the central heat plant providing steam to our buildings through out the complex while being supported by a talented group of employees in the Operations and Maintenance Division. Our bio mass plant is capable of burning both wood chips and oil, so a mechanical background is preferred.    


The position will work a swing shift. The schedule is as follows and the winter schedule will include a shift differential. 

  • November through April the hours are Sunday 8am to 4pm, Monday and Tuesday 12am to 8am, Thursday and Friday 4pm to 12am, with Wednesday and Saturday off.
  • May through October the hours are Monday through Friday 7am to 3:30pm.

 

The starting pay for this position is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. The pay range is $16.32 to $19.48 per hour. 

 

This position is eligible for a sign-on and retention bonus of up to $1000! Only new hires employed by BGS as a Central Heat Plant Operator in the location specified in this job posting are eligible for this bonus program. Environmental Factors

Duties are typically performed in a heating plant facility and may involve varying work shifts. Need for overtime may occur. Operation and servicing of mechanical equipment and high pressure systems poses some potential of on-the-job injury.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years or more of experience or training in a mechanical, building maintenance or equipment repair field.

OR

High school diploma or equivalent AND successful completion of the BGS boiler room training program.

 

Note: During non-heating seasons, incumbents of this class may assist in routine building/equipment, or grounds maintenance functions as assigned.

 

A valid motor vehicle driver's license may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience related to heating equipment.
