Overview

This Assistant State Fire Marshal position focuses on public education and outreach, with key responsibilities that include supporting Community Risk Reduction programs and Vermont’s 802 Smoke and Carbon Monoxide initiatives. The role involves event setup and equipment transport for public outreach activities, as well as delivering public education through presentations and community engagement.

PUBLIC SAFETY BACKGROUND CHECKS: Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position to include Motor Vehicle/Criminal Records, Personal History, Credit and any additional background check(s).

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in both standard office and field settings. Class incumbents may encounter a wide range of physical conditions while inspecting buildings or construction sites. Considerable travel is required for which private means of transportation shall be available. Strong and differing opinions will be encountered on a regular basis. Emergencies may require work outside of normal work schedule. Field duties may require work in contaminated environments and may require protective clothing and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree or above in engineering, architecture, electronics, environmental safety, industrial health, physical science, fire science or closely related field.

OR

High School/Vocational diploma or equivalent AND EITHER three (3) years or more at or above a technical level in the areas of building trades/construction, architecture, fire, electrical, boiler, or plumbing inspection OR five (5) years or more of technical level experience in engineering, building trades/construction, health code, code/law enforcement or fire service-related fields. 

OR

Certification as a fire inspector or fire plans examiner from a recognized accreditation program. 

Special Requirements

All candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a thorough background investigation conducted by the Department of Public Safety, including a motor vehicle and criminal background investigation.
