Come join a team of dedicated and compassionate staff at a new 16-bed state-of-the-art Secure Residential Facility in Essex, Vermont.. You will play an essential role in the person-centered treatment of adults with severe mental illness. The facility is over 17,000 square feet with a separate full-size gymnasium. The new facility is scheduled to open in early April of 2023 and will be transitioning from the current 7-bed Secure Residential Program located in Middlesex, Vermont.


This role is responsible for the direct oversite of the clinical care offered within the facility, the supervision and oversight of clinical staff, and will provide clinical trainings to staff within the facility. The role involves significant interaction with designated Agencies, Hospital programs and other entities in the form of treatment team meetings, preadmission meetings, and discharge planning meetings. The Assistant Director role is carried out under the general direction of the Director of the Secure Residential Facility. The Assistant Director will provide direct therapeutic supports to individuals within the program and will assist in tracking clinical outcomes and interpreting outcomes to inform future planning and the delivery of therapeutic services at the facility.


The River Valley Therapeutic Residence (RVTR) aims to improve the health and well-being of Vermont's most vulnerable populations while focusing on psychiatric rehabilitation services and psychosocial treatment delivered in a recovery oriented, trauma informed, person-centered, holistic environment. The program offers a safe space to focus on recovery and community integration for those individuals no longer needing hospital level of care but who are not yet ready to transition back to the community. During this time of transition, individuals will need to travel to Middlesex, Waterbury, and Berlin for training and shadowing. There may be some flexibility for remote work during this transition as well.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in a secure residential program environment, including office and residential settings. Direct interaction with residents is anticipated with potential exposure to communicable disease or injury being present. Duties may, at times, extend beyond the normal daytime and work week hours. Frequent off-site travel is required for which private means of transportation should be available.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters in Psychology, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, or Social Work AND five (5) years or more of professional experience in the mental health field AND one (1) year of supervisory experience in the mental health field.


Ph.D. or PsyD. in Clinical Psychology from an accredited program AND two (2) years or more of professional experience in the mental health field AND one (1) year of supervisory experience in the mental health field.

Note: Must be Licensed or eligible for Licensure in Psychology, Clinical Mental Health Counseling or Social Work in the State of Vermont.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience providing graduate school instruction

Experience training interns

Experience in program development and evaluation

Experience in conducting empirical research.

Experience providing clinical supervision

Experience with adults with serious mental illness

Experience providing clinical testimony in court
