Overview

Hourly rates within the Classified Bargaining Unit Pay Plan will change effective July 3, 2022.  At that time, the starting rate (Step 1) for this job opening will be $31.16 per hour.

The St. Johnsbury District Office of the Vermont Department of Health has a dynamic opportunity for an enthusiastic and organized nurse who is passionate about improving community health. The right candidate will focus primarily on infectious disease epidemiology and chronic disease prevention program activities.  All Department of Health employees participate in emergency preparedness planning and operations, including COVID-19 response.

 

Epidemiology job duties will include working with community partners in the reporting and surveillance of infectious disease, conducting contact tracing during investigations, and providing public health recommendations to prevent the spread of infectious disease. In the management of some infectious diseases, the Public Health Nurse may be asked to perform in-person case management and Directly Observed Therapy. 

 

Chronic Disease Prevention activities are responsive to community and department priorities.  The Public Health Nurse serves as a public health expert helping cities and towns make changes to their policies and infrastructure to create a healthy environment for all residents and improving health equity in their community. The Public Health Nurse collaborates with the other team members to coordinate and support efforts across communities in the district and incorporates community engagement into their work. 

 

The Public Health Nurse will:
•    Develop and maintain internal and external collaboration, communication, and partnerships to further the goals of the VT Department of Health to include, but not limited to, developing, and presenting public health topics to internal and external partners. 
•    Respond to inquiries from the public, community partners, and healthcare professionals.
•    Provide investigative coverage for infectious disease surveillance and immunizations.
•    Demonstrate and maintain competence in clinical skills such as venipuncture, tuberculin skin testing and vaccinations.
•    Provide support and services during public health emergencies, including the current COVID-19 efforts.

Environmental Factors

Duties primarily performed in a standard office setting. Work may be performed in clinic settings and possibly client homes. Exposure to communicable diseases and other stressful situations may occur. Private means of transportation is required. May be required to work evenings, weekends and 12 hour shifts.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in nursing AND two (2) years or more of professional nursing experience.

OR

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

OR

College senior in the final semester of a bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) program. (Graduation from the BSN program must occur prior to hire and continued employment will be contingent on the employee passing the Nursing Licensure Exam (NCLEX).

Possession of, or eligibility for, licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Vermont OR eligible to practice in the state of Vermont via a multi-state license.

NOTE: Must maintain Vermont licensure or multi-state license as a Registered Nurse as a condition of employment.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
