Description
The Office of the Defender General is seeking a self-motivated and dependable candidate to fill a Legal Assistant I position, providing administrative support for our busy Franklin County Public Defender’s Office.
Responsibilities will include maintaining frequent interaction with clients, answering phones, assisting with attorney scheduling, assisting with electronically filing notices and orders, entering caseload data into case management system, and drafting legal documents and correspondence, among other tasks.
The Legal Assistant I position is an integral part of the office, and the position requires patience and the ability to work with a wide variety of people and sometimes difficult personalities. Prior administrative/secretarial experience preferred.
Compensation
Minimum: $20.99 Maximum: $32.46
The salary range reflects the minimum rate and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Basic knowledge of:
- Legal and legal office practices and procedures.
- Departmental policies and procedures.
- How to review legal documents and respond, advise or seek guidance.
- The principles of office management, including office practices, procedures and equipment.
- Record maintenance procedures.
- Microsoft Office programs and Adobe Acrobat DC.
- How to compose a variety of letters, memoranda, and reports on own initiative or from minimum instructions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate’s degree or two or more years of full-time college coursework (or the equivalent) AND two (2) years or more of experience performing legal administrative duties. OR bachelor’s degree AND one (1) year or more of experience performing legal administrative duties. OR paralegal certification AND two (2) years or more of experience performing legal administrative duties. OR high school diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years or more of experience performing legal administrative duties.
