Overview

Correctional Educators work with adult learners in small group classes using specially designed curriculum adapted for individual education levels in a correctional facility environment. Subject matter includes Adult Basic Education in reading, writing, and mathematics, secondary studies in science, literature, mathematics, global citizenship, health/PE, and art. Correctional Educators work on multidisciplinary teams to develop Personalized Learning Plans for secondary studies and individualized learning plans for individuals needing extra supports. Provide individual academic advising and encouragement as needed. Prepares, administers, and scores diagnostic and specialized assessments and standardized tests. Work as a member of correctional facility educational support team and multidisciplinary teams as needed. Reviews and analyzes educational practices and procedures, evaluates practices, and makes recommendations to ensure established educational standards are met. Maintains student progress, attendance, and related records in the Student Information System (SIS). Preference for experience working with at-risk populations in alternative education settings.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed in an institutional setting with constant exposure to and interaction with correctional facility residents. Security is a constant concern. Some travel may be necessary for which a valid driver's license and private means of transportation is necessary. Inmates may at times be belligerent and threatening, creating some potential for physical danger.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree AND Vermont Department of Education educator's license Level I or II OR eligibility to obtain Vermont educator's license within 6 months of hire.
