Overview
Buildings & General Service at the State of Vermont has an exciting and unique opportunity with room for growth as a BGS Institutional Mechanic within the Operations & Management Division. This position will be responsible for the daily maintenance at Southern State Correctional Facility (SSCF) in Springfield. The hours are Monday through Friday, 7am to 3:30pm. Successful completion of multiple background checks are required for this position.

Environmental Factors
Duties are performed at institutional facilities that operate 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Contact with inmates can be anticipated. Incumbents may encounter harassment or hostile behavior and must be able to respond in a calm and professional manner. Must be able to climb ladders, lift weights up to 75 pounds, and work in cramped, wet, or poorly ventilated areas. Plumbing repairs often entail exposure to raw sewage, for which protective clothing must be worn. Work in all types of weather should be anticipated. May require possession of a valid driver's license. Emergency response to calls outside of regular work hours can be expected. Some potential for physical injury may be present.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years or more of experience in building construction, structural maintenance, or building repair and maintenance.
OR
Completion of a one (1) year vocational/technical training program in building or construction trades, mechanical repair, industrial arts or closely related area AND two (2) years or more of experience in in building construction, structural maintenance, or building repair and maintenance
OR
State licensure at or above the journeyman level in any trade area.
Special Requirements
IMM Candidates must be fingerprinted and pass a background investigation applicable to the position. Stand-by coverage is required for long holiday qeekends and Mechanics can expect after-hours call-ins.
