Title: BGS Institutional Maintenance Mechanic

Overview
The Buildings & General Services (BGS) team in Springfields is seeking a skilled and dependable Institutional Maintenance Mechanic to perform a variety of building, grounds, and utility maintenance tasks at state facilities. This role is essential to ensuring the safety, functionality, and upkeep of our buildings and infrastructure.
This position will:
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on building systems, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and structural components.
- Conduct repairs to fixtures, equipment, and facility infrastructure as needed.
- Maintain grounds, including snow removal, landscaping, and general outdoor upkeep.
- Respond to maintenance requests promptly, ensuring minimal disruption to facility operations.
- Operate and maintain tools, machinery, and equipment safely and efficiently.
- Assist in special projects, renovations, and emergency repairs.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience in general building maintenance, carpentry, plumbing, or electrical work.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and work orders.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Physical ability to lift, carry, and operate tools and equipment in various environments.
- A valid driver's license and ability to travel between facilities as required.
Candidates must be able to pass a background check. The hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30am to 3pm, with the possibility of on call hours.

Environmental Factors
Duties are performed at institutional facilities that operate 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Contact with inmates can be anticipated. Incumbents may encounter harassment or hostile behavior and must be able to respond in a calm and professional manner. Must be able to climb ladders, lift weights up to 75 pounds, and work in cramped, wet, or poorly ventilated areas. Plumbing repairs often entail exposure to raw sewage, for which protective clothing must be worn. Work in all types of weather should be anticipated. May require possession of a valid driver's license. Emergency response to calls outside of regular work hours can be expected. Some potential for physical injury may be present.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a trade program or technical school in electrical, HVAC or plumbing, or buildings related field.
OR
Three (3) or more years of experience in building construction, structural maintenance, or building repair and maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications
State licensure at or above the journeyman level in any trade area.
One (1) or more years of experience as a team lead or overseeing maintenance projects.
Special Requirements
IMM Candidates must be fingerprinted and pass a background investigation applicable to the position. Stand-by coverage is required for long Holiday Weekends and Mechanics can expect after-hours call-ins.
