Buildings & General Service at the State of Vermont has an exciting and unique opportunity with room for growth as a BGS Institutional Mechanic within the Operations & Management Division. This position will be responsible for the daily maintenance at Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility (CRCF) as well as part of a larger team that performs these duties at other state facilities within the greater Burlington area. Travel between these facilities may be required and will utilize a state owned and or a privately owned vehicle. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a criminal background check are required for this position.

This is a full-time position and the hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed at institutional facilities. Contact with inmates may be anticipated. Incumbents may encounter harassment or hostile behavior, and must be able to respond in a calm and professional manner. Must be able to climb ladders, lift weights up to 75 pounds, and work in cramped, wet, or poorly ventilated areas. Plumbing repairs often entail exposure to raw sewage, for which protective clothing must be worn. Work in all types of weather should be anticipated. May require possession of a valid driver's license. May require emergency response to calls outside of regular work hours. Some potential for physical injury may be present.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years or more of experience in building construction, structural maintenance, or building repair and maintenance.


Completion of a one (1) year vocational/technical training program in building or construction trades, mechanical repair, industrial arts or closely related area AND two (2) years or more of experience in in building construction, structural maintenance, or building repair and maintenance


State licensure at or above the journeyman level in any trade area.
