The Public Health Nurse promotes access to care among school-age children by supporting and providing technical assistance to school nurses in public and private schools in Rutland County. The position engages school nurses to meet health standards, improve record keeping, track vaccination rates, and develop technical and leadership skills. The Public Health Nurse promotes the Vermont Department of Health's "Essential School Health Services" system for public schools, and the adoption of electronic health record systems. In all aspects of the job, the Public Health Nurse will strive to provide equitable, linguistically, and culturally appropriate care to meet the needs of all Vermonters.

The candidate in this position will also be required to provide support to our epidemiology and immunization work. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this entails participation our COVID-19 vaccination, testing, and outbreak prevention efforts and may require extended workday or weekend hours.

Class Definition

Assessment, analysis, education, coordination, and evaluation of services and interventions aimed at population health. Duties include health promotion and disease prevention though the use of evidence based programs and in collaboration with multiple health professionals. Particular emphasis of work is on improving public health services and programs in communities.

Environmental Factors

Duties primarily performed in a standard office setting. Work may be performed in clinic settings and possibly client homes. Exposure to communicable diseases and other stressful situations may occur. Private means of transportation is required. May be required to work evenings, weekends and 12 hour shifts.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in nursing AND two (2) years or more of professional nursing experience.


Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).


College senior in the final semester of a bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) program. (Graduation from the BSN program must occur prior to hire and continued employment will be contingent on the employee passing the Nursing Licensure Exam (NCLEX).

Possession of, or eligibility for, licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Vermont.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

NOTE: Must maintain Vermont licensure as a Registered Nurse as a condition of employment.
