Overview

The ideal candidate is someone who: has strong customer service experience; demonstrates maturity and excellent decision making; welcomes new ideas while embracing change; contributes to a professional cooperative work environment; communicates in a respectful, civil manner (oral, nonverbal, and written) and regularly utilizes active listening skills. Incumbents are responsible for the organization and delivery of clerical and secretarial services. Some administrative tasks may be present but are not the dominant factor in the class. Work is performed under the general direction of an OCS Regional Manager or administrative superior, but with need for significant interaction with other division or department staff, other state, or outside agencies. All employees of the Agency of Human Services perform their respective functions adhering to four key practices: customer service, holistic service, strengths-based relationships, and results orientation.

AHS BACKGROUND CHECKS:  Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.  In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.

Environmental Factors

Employees in this class may be confronted by clients in a highly agitated, angry, or confused condition. Extensive interaction with judicial and legal personnel and out-of-state agencies may occur. The workload is heavy and time sensitive. Duties are normally performed in a standard office setting.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in business, secretarial science or office management.

OR

Three (3) years of office clerical experience. 

OR

High school graduation or equivalent AND completion of a one (1) year or more vocational/technical training program in business and office occupations or related area AND three (3) years of office clerical experience.
