Overview

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is looking to hire a temporary technician to assist with fisheries work out of the Rutland, VT office during the 2026 field season.

This position will primarily assist department fisheries biologists in conducting field-based fisheries assessments including boat and backpack electrofishing, gill netting, trap netting and seine netting surveys, bass and fish community monitoring in lakes and ponds, stream trout population surveys, temperature monitoring, culvert assessments, habitat improvement projects, and creel surveys. Other duties include fish stocking, data entry, laboratory specimen processing, and equipment preparation, maintenance, and disinfection.

The position can be physically demanding and require being outdoors in all types of weather. Employees are limited to 40 hours/week and 1280 total hours (32 weeks) in a calendar year. Schedule may include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, or holidays when required. Benefits and housing are not included with these positions.

Minimum of 60 college credits in a natural resource related field. Related professional work may substitute for college experience. Applicants must have a valid motor vehicle operator's license, be at least 18 years of age, able to lift at least 50lbs, and can work alone, as a team, and with the public. Boating and trailering experience is preferred but not required.
