Overview

Buildings & General Service (BGS) at the State of Vermont has an exciting and unique opportunity with room for growth as a maintenance mechanic II within the Operations & Management Division. This position is highly interactive with the customers of the Asa Bloomer building with support for their division's needs. This position plans small day-to-day projects, works semi independently, and communicates with the facility's maintenance supervisor. 


Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Order materials for filter changes, lighting, painting, wall repair, and for various building fixes as needed. 
  • Move customer items such as desks, chairs, whiteboards and cork boards hanging items when needed for customers division operations. 
  • Perform sheetrock repairs, and prime and paints rooms as requests are received, changes ceiling tiles, light bulbs. 
  • Participate as a team member with the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, masonry, fire alarm, sprinkler systems under the assistance and direction of trade specialists and assists them while onsite. 
  • Assist with work at other state-owned buildings such as MVRCF as needed for support of operations. Travel between these facilities may be required and will utilize a state owned and/or a privately owned vehicle.
  • Perform construction and alteration work to include maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment, buildings, and utilities. 
  • Assist onsite custodial with trash removal at the transit center and utilizes a pressure washer for cleaning of the ground level customer service island. 
  • Respond to emergencies that may arise within the building during normal business hours as well as after hours as needed.  

 

This is a full-time position and the hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30 am to 3:00pm. This position requires successful completion of multiple background checks.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed at state buildings including correctional facilities. Contact with inmates may be anticipated. Incumbents may encounter harassment or hostile behavior and must be able to respond in a calm and professional manner. Must be able to climb ladders, lift weights up to 75 pounds, and work in cramped, wet, or poorly ventilated areas. Plumbing repairs often entail exposure to raw sewage, for which protective clothing must be worn. Work in all types of weather should be anticipated. May require possession of a valid driver's license. May require emergency response to calls outside of regular work hours. Some potential for physical injury may be present.

Minimum Qualifications

Two (2) or more years of experience in building construction, structural maintenance, or building repair and maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of a vocational/technical training program in building trades, mechanical repair, industrial arts, or a closely related field.

Special Requirements

Some positions in this class may require a valid driver's license and/or own transportation for travel between work sites.

A criminal record check and/or child abuse registry check may be required for some positions within this class based on the locations where duties are to be performed.
