The Vermont Department of Taxes' Taxpayer Services Division has an immediate opening for an Assistant Director. This is a full-time permanent position located in Montpelier, Vermont.

The ideal candidate must have:

  • Substantial knowledge of federal and state tax law 
  • An understanding of accounting and audit principles 
  • A strong background in supervisory practices and theories 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A collaborative attitude

The Assistant Director is responsible for oversight of the Division's supervisory team and their staff, focusing on Personal Income, Business, Corporate, and Real Estate Taxes. The Assistant Director participates in the day-to-day operations and administration of the Division, as well as long-term planning and implementation of strategic goals. This position involves extensive interaction and collaboration with the other Tax Department Divisions and presents numerous opportunities for public engagement in the form of presentations, workshops, and training programs. 

About The Taxpayer Services Division
Taxpayer Services is the first stop for taxpayers when questions or concerns arise. Its primary function is to provide exemplary customer service and to process returns for the 30-plus tax types administered by the Department. TPS is responsible for ensuring that returns and revenue are processed efficiently and refunds are issued in a timely manner. The work is fast paced, rewarding, and supports the Department's core values of service, integrity, and community.

VERMONT DEPARTMENT OF TAXES (VDT) BACKGROUND CHECKS:  This position will primarily support the Department of Taxes. Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates. This requirement shall not apply to the following: current classified State employees seeking transfer, promotion, or demotion into a VDT classified position, or those who are exercising re-employment (RIF) rights. Candidates will have the right to withdraw their application before fingerprinting or a background check is conducted.

Beginning September 15, 2021, State of Vermont Executive Branch employees must attest to being fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus or be subject to regular COVID-19 testing and masking requirements.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed largely in a standard office setting. Incumbents can anticipate some stressful encounters with employees, taxpayers and/or their representatives with strong differences of opinion. Occasional travel may require private means of transportation. Some work outside of normal work schedule should be anticipated.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, or an equally pertinent field AND six (6) years or more professional accounting or auditing experience.


CPA License

Preferred Qualifications

Accounting or auditing experience in the public or governmental sectors.

Four (4) years or more in a supervisory or training capacity.
