Overview

Do you have experience preparing Corporate Income Tax or Business returns?  Come put that experience to good use in Vermont! The Department of Taxes is looking for a policy analyst to focus extensively on corporate and business income taxes. This position works directly with Department leadership to help develop and refine corporate compliance programs. Interaction with state legislators is also likely as Vermont continues to modernize its tax code.

VERMONT DEPARTMENT OF TAXES (VDT) BACKGROUND CHECKS:  This position will primarily support the Department of Taxes. Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates. This requirement shall not apply to the following: current classified State employees seeking transfer, promotion, or demotion into a VDT classified position, or those who are exercising re-employment (RIF) rights. Candidates will have the right to withdraw their application before fingerprinting or a background check is conducted.

Environmental Factors

Duties are normally performed in a standard office setting. Appearances at legislative hearings can be anticipated. Strong differences of opinion will be encountered on a regular basis. Some work may be required outside of normal work hours. Some travel may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree AND four (4) years or more of experience at a professional level in tax policy analysis or closely related experience such as in public policy, accounting, law, economics, or auditing.

OR

Master's degree or higher in business or public administration AND two (2) years or more of experience at a professional level in tax policy analysis or closely related experience such as in public policy, accounting, law, economics, or auditing.

OR

CPA designation AND two (2) years or more of experience at a professional level in tax policy analysis or closely related experience such as in public policy, accounting, law, economics, or auditing.

Preferred Qualifications

Direct experience with corporate or business income tax preparation or audit program design or management. Multi-state experience or direct experience with the Vermont corporate income tax code is particularly valued.
