The Compliance Division at the Tax Department is recruiting for an office audit position. The auditor will work as part of a statewide compliance audit team often interacting directly with tax payers to conduct examinations of records and to promote compliance and educate tax payers. The position will audit a variety of tax types administered by the Vermont Department of Taxes.

Class Definition

Taxpayer assistance, education, review and auditing work for the Vermont Department of Taxes. This position involves interaction with taxpayers and/or taxpayer representatives regarding tax obligations and filings, business registrations and filing requirements. Incumbents in this class are expected to resolve tax issues with the highest degree of difficulty and complexity. Incumbents in this class deal with all tax types and audit programs administered by the Vermont Department of tax, which often have the highest degree of difficulty and complexity. Incumbents in this class are expected to perform assignments with a high degree of independence. Incumbents in this class work with minimal supervision. Work is performed under the supervision of an administrative supervisor.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in a standard office setting. Workload pressure may vary over time. Incumbents must be able to concentrate on details and perform accurate work in the face of frequent interruptions. Human relations skills may be needed to deal with the general public. Stressful situations and strong differences of opinion with taxpayers or their representatives may occur. Some travel for work may be required. Pressure from work deadlines is predictable.

Minimum Qualifications

Licensure as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) AND two (2) years or more of professional level experience in tax examination, accounting, auditing or business administration.

OR

Bachelor's degree or higher AND one (1) year or more of professional level experience in tax examination, accounting, auditing or business administration.

OR

Associate's degree with courses in accounting, finance, business administration, taxation AND three (3) years or more of professional level experience in tax examination, accounting, auditing or business administration.

OR

Two (2) year or more of experience as a Tax Examiner III.

VERMONT DEPARTMENT OF TAXES (VDT) BACKGROUND CHECKS

Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates. This requirement shall not apply to the following: current classified State employees seeking transfer, promotion, or demotion into a VDT classified position, or those who are exercising re-employment (RIF) rights. Candidates will have the right to withdraw their application before fingerprinting or a background check is conducted.
