The Department of Taxes is seeking Tax Examiners for seasonal positions. These positions will start in mid-January and will provide support to customers throughout the tax season, which is approximately 3 to 6 months. It is anticipated these positions will work full-time hours for the duration of the position.

Who May Apply

This position, Tax Examiner II (Job Requisition #44905), is open to all State employees and external applicants. This is a temporary position. Temporary work is typically for variable hours and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week.

VERMONT DEPARTMENT OF TAXES (VDT) BACKGROUND CHECKS: This position will primarily support the Department of Taxes. Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates. Candidates will have the right to withdraw their application before fingerprinting or a background check is conducted.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in a standard office setting. Workload pressure may vary over time. Some routine data entry may be required in certain positions or for certain periods. Incumbents must be able to concentrate on details and perform accurate work in the face of frequent interruptions. Human relations skills may be needed to deal with the general public. There is regular pressure from continual work deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree or higher AND one (1) year or more of experience in accounting, auditing, or tax processing related duties.

OR

High school diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years or more of experience in accounting, auditing, or tax processing related duties.

OR

One (1) year or more as a Tax Examiner I.

OR

Licensure as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
