The Department of Taxes Compliance Division is seeking a motivated professional who wants to make a meaningful impact by conducting audits that ensure the fair and accurate administration of Vermont's tax laws. In this role, you'll review complex taxpayer records, promote voluntary compliance, and help Vermonters understand their obligations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Reviewing and analyzing taxpayer returns Preparing assessments and adjustments to support accurate compliance
- Communicating with taxpayers and their representatives
- Participating in appeals and settlement discussions
- Performing advanced audit tasks with independence and high competency
- Mentoring, supervising, and directing junior level auditors or tax analysts
- Conducting on site audits when appropriate

The hourly salary rate for this position ranges from $34.96 to $54.82, and State of Vermont benefits are very competitive. The annualized salary for this position ranges from approximately $72,716.80 to $114,025.60. The salary range reflects the minimum and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade, and the annualized salary figure is calculated based on 2080 hours of annual compensation and does not include authorized overtime or other compensation. It also doesn't include any time taken off payroll. The starting salary for this position may be negotiable depending on experience and qualifications.
About The Compliance Division
The Compliance Division is responsible for promoting and ensuring Vermont taxpayer compliance, with a focus on early intervention, education, outreach, and fairness. We value service, integrity, and employee growth, as we aim to support Vermont communities effectively and efficiently. Our team includes auditors, tax examiners, analysts, tax collection officers, and support staff.
Background Checks
This position will primarily support the Department of Taxes. Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates. Candidates will have the right to withdraw their application before fingerprinting or a background check is conducted.

Environmental Factors
Work is performed in a standard office setting. An Auditor IV may be sitting or standing, most frequently using a computer and phone. There may be very occasional light lifting, and general walking around the office setting.
Some fieldwork requiring travel may be required. Audit work and review of records may also be performed in a home and/or central office location as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor or higher in accounting, auditing, business management, public administration, mathematics, finance or a related field AND five (5) years or more of experience at a professional level in tax examination, accounting, auditing, or business administration or related field AND one (1) or more years in a supervisory role.
OR
Six (6) or more years’ experience in tax examination/preparation, accounting, auditing or business administration AND two (2) or more years in a supervisory role.
OR
Three (3) years or more of experience as a Tax Field Auditor IV or Tax Auditor IV; or Four (4) years or more of experience as a Tax Examiner VI or Tax Analyst V with the State Of Vermont Department Of Taxes.
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Public Accountant
Experience in a government audit role.

Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.
