Do you want to assist Vermonters with work that impacts virtually every person in our state?  This position will work closely with Vermont Department of Taxes staff, taxpayers, and many other state agencies and towns. 

 

Key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Providing support to taxpayers through both phone, emails and in person.
  • Reviewing returns for accuracy and correcting mistakes or requesting information.
  • Working collaboratively with other staff to ensure deadlines are met.

 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Extension tax knowledge
  • Experience in business or fiscal duties.
  • Knowledge of local government.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate challenging topics to individuals with varied backgrounds.
  • A desire to continue to learn and grow.

 

Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates. Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in a standard office setting. Workload pressure is usually high, and is intense from February through June.  Incumbents must be able to concentrate on details and perform accurate work in the face of frequent interruptions.  

The work of the Tax Analyst Vs directly affects the financial/tax accounts of Vermont individuals and businesses. Calculations, adjustments, advice, and communications must be accurate and timely. They work on the highest dollar value cases and accounts (potentially in the millions of dollars), with significant independence. Stressful situations and strong differences of opinion and legal interpretation with taxpayers or their representatives may occur. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or greater in accounting, economics, business administration, public administration, finance, math, or related field AND at least five (5) years of experience in accounting, auditing, tax preparation, tax processing, financial operations/administration, analytics, or related field AND at least two (2) years of management, supervision, or project management/coordination

 

OR

 

High School diploma/equivalent of higher degree AND at least five (5) years of experience in accounting, auditing, tax preparation, tax processing, financial operations/administration, analytics, or related field AND at least three (3) years of management, supervision, or project management/coordination

 

OR

 

Two (2) years or more as a Tax Analyst IV or Tax Examiner V or VI

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications    Licensure as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Enrolled Agent (EA)
