What you'll do

  • Provide in person customer service and front-desk reception at our Montpelier office.
  • Assist taxpayers by phone and email; triage inquiries and route as needed.
  • Review tax returns for accuracy, correct errors, and request additional information when required.
  • Collaborate with teammates and other state agencies/municipal partners to meet deadlines and service-level expectations.
  • Support special projects and help maintain efficient workflow processes.

 

What we're looking for

  • Experience in business, finance, or fiscal duties and strong customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of Vermont/local government is helpful.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain complex topics to diverse audiences with patience and clarity.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and eager to learn new systems and processes.
  • Must be comfortable working at a front desk, handling phones, and responding to email inquiries.

 

Work conditions and requirements

  • Full-time, in-office position located in the Montpelier main office reception area.
  • Reliable personal transportation to the Montpelier office is required.
  • Ability to handle confidential taxpayer information with discretion and professionalism.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in a standard office setting. Workload pressure is usually high and is intense from February through June. Incumbents must be able to concentrate on details and perform accurate work in the face of frequent interruptions. The work of Tax Analyst IIIs directly affects the financial/tax accounts of Vermont individuals and businesses. Calculations, adjustments, advice, and communications must be accurate and timely. Stressful situations and strong differences of opinion with taxpayers or their representatives may occur.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher and one (1) or more years of work in accounting, auditing, tax preparation, tax processing, financial operations/administration, analytics, or related field

 

OR

 

High School diploma or equivalent or higher and at least four (4) years of experience in accounting, auditing, tax preparation, tax processing, financial operations/administration, analytics, or related field

 

OR

 

One (1) year or more as a Tax Analyst II or Tax Examiner III

Preferred Qualifications

Licensure as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Enrolled Agent (EA) Degree or coursework in accounting, economics, business administration, public administration, finance, math, or related field
