The Senior Tax Specialist will focus on administrative, financial, legal, and advisory work for the Department. The position will work directly with Taxpayer Services Director, Assistant Director, Operation Manager, Section Chiefs, and others.


The primary responsibility will be to form and lead a team to focus on appeals within Taxpayer Services. This will ensure timely and consistent processing of all appeals from all sections within the division.  These may range from the simplest dispute of a $50 late file fee to the most complex high dollar corporate appeals. Responsibilities will also include the docketing of appeals for hearing, working closely with the Legal division. This position will be required to make sure examiners uphold the guidelines within the Appeals SOP. 


Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates. Candidates will have the right to withdraw their application before fingerprinting or a background check is conducted.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in a standard office setting. Work outside of regular work schedule may be anticipated. Occasional travel to various in and out of state business locations may also be anticipated. Disagreements may arise with representatives of some of the corporate taxpayers which will require the use of both tact and diplomacy.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, public administration, mathematics, or a relevant field AND five (5) years or more of professional tax administration, accounting, or auditing experience.

 

OR

 

Accreditation as a CPA or Certified Internal Auditor and five (5) years or more of professional tax administration, accounting, or auditing experience.
 

Preferred Qualifications


Accounting or auditing experience in the public or governmental sectors.
