Overview

This IT Enterprise Architect position will be assigned to the Cloud Services team. The Cloud Services team maintains the cloud computing infrastructure for the entire Executive Branch.

Members of the Cloud Services team must demonstrate a broad-base understanding of IT systems. The team maintains NAS storage, server backups, Microsoft Azure (commercial & government), AWS (commercial & government) and other related systems. Each member of the team has broad IT knowledge but focuses on a specific area. Team members frequently collaborate with each other, other IT departments and clients to ensure positive project outcomes.

This position's primary focus is on VMWare administration.

Job duties include:

  • Infrastructure implementation: Hardware installation and maintenance, comprehensive VMWare configuration
  • Maintenance: Monitor client systems daily and pinpoint problem areas. Proactively monitor for and install VMWare upgrades, releases, and application patches. OS level maintenance on supporting VMs. Update drivers, servers, and firmware with newer technology. Provide a point of contact for manufacturer support teams.
  • Provide Technical Support: Must respond promptly to issues reported by clients, conducting root cause analysis and going through various testing scenarios for thorough resolution. 
  • Recommend Solutions: Participate in planning client infrastructures. Gather system data, research solutions, develop and present design ideas, and thoughtfully evaluate suggestions from others. Also valuate industry trends and assist in implementing standards and best practices. Anticipate and proactively recommend changes to the current infrastructure to account for growth or other factors.
  • Documentation: Create and maintain documentation for all system-related processes and procedures, project requirements, changes and upgrades, implementation plans, and support tickets.
  • Hybrid Cloud design and management: Understand and assist in both the VMWare environment and Azure/AWS environments.
  • This person will be part of a team and is expected to communicate effectively with the team, other IT departments and clients. It is expected that this person will continue to grow and learn new skills so they can support other team members, as well as provide instruction when needed.
  • This position requires a self-starter who can prioritize their time without heavy supervision.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed in a standard office setting, but some travel may be required for which private means of transportation should be available. Work outside of regular business hours may be expected.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer science AND two (2) years or more in IT architecture and design processes/constraints including design and management of physical/virtual platforms, application dependencies, system performance, failover and high availability mechanisms, capacity planning, network topology, application interoperability and service orientation frameworks and security/compliance standards such as NIST, IRS 1075, HIPAA.

OR

Associate's degree in computer science AND four (4) years or more years or more in IT architecture and design processes/constraints including design and management of physical/virtual platforms, application dependencies, system performance, failover and high availability mechanisms, capacity planning, network topology, application interoperability and service orientation frameworks and security/compliance standards such as NIST, IRS 1075, HIPAA.

OR

High school diploma or equivalent and six (6) years or more in IT architecture and design processes/constraints including design and management of physical/virtual platforms, application dependencies, system performance, failover and high availability mechanisms, capacity planning, network topology, application interoperability and service orientation frameworks and security/compliance standards such as NIST, IRS 1075, HIPAA

Preferred Qualifications

The incumbent must be a detail-oriented individual with strong technical expertise and multitasking skills. They should thrive in an agile, fast-paced environment, keep abreast of innovations, regulation changes, and other industry developments. 

VMware expertise - Must have advanced proficiency with vSphere, NSX, and other VMware products in general, with working knowledge of firewalls, servers, networks, and operating systems. Familiarity with normal tools of the trade, such as WinSCP, SSH, RDP etc.
Troubleshooting - Should be an excellent problem-solver who can determine the main source of issues and provide quick, elegant solutions. Should be familiar with troubleshooting tools such as iPerf, Wireshark, Splunk etc.
Attention to detail - Cloud Services administrators must ensure that all details are correct in order to avoid malfunctions, bugs, and security breaches.
Customer service -This person must possess a strong customer orientation, as they provide technical support as requested to the team and clients and explain complex topics in layman's terms.
Technical writing - Should be comfortable with technical writing and produce documentation about infrastructure design, quality standards, testing procedures, and other essential project information. 
Vendor interaction- This person will be responsible for interacting with vendors and their support departments to maintain and repair all hardware and software used by Cloud Services. They must be able to effectively work with vendor support in a professional manner at all times.
