Overview

The Highway Safety Program Specialist will act as the Driver Training Coordinator at the VT DMV. This position is responsible for the licensing and supervision of the DMV standard driver training school instructors, and schools, as well as the CDL instructors and CDL schools. Duties will include setting up and approving professional development opportunities for the renewal of instructor licenses, such as the annual Summer Summit for Driver Educators. This position requires the applicant to work closely with all departments at the DMV, the Agency of Education, the Vermont Highway Safety Alliance, the Highway Safety Office and driver educators in Vermont. The position provides information concerning teacher training and testing for DMV licensure, weekly crash facts, monthly awareness activities, opportunities for professional development, activities, lesson plans and videos to be used in the driver education classroom.  Site visits and travel are expected.  Previous experience as a driver’s educator is preferred.

In accordance with Title 23, Section 102(d), an applicant must agree to be finger-printed and pass a background investigation to be eligible for this position. Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in a standard office setting and in field locations. Private means of transportation must be available. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered. Some evening or overtime work may be necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher AND two (2) years or more performing administrative or technical-level duties (e.g., such as interpretation of laws, rules and regulations, data collection and analysis, managing support services, or implementing program policies and procedures) for a project, program, or operation in a field related to transportation.

OR

Associate's degree AND four (4) years or more performing administrative or technical-level duties (e.g., such as interpretation of laws, rules and regulations, data collection and analysis, managing support services, or implementing program policies and procedures) for a project, program, or operation INCLUDING two (2) years or more in a field related to transportation.

OR

High School diploma or equivalent AND six (6) years or more performing administrative or technical-level duties (e.g., such as interpretation of laws, rules and regulations, data collection and analysis, managing support services, or implementing program policies and procedures) for a project, program, or operation INCLUDING two (2) years or more in a field related to transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience as a driver’s educator is preferred.
