Buildings and General Services (BGS) at the State of Vermont has an unique opportunity within in the Grounds Department as a Grounds & Landscape Specialist for the historic Montpelier complex. This is a team-orientated position that would be taking care of all aspects of landscaping of the grounds at the Montpelier complex. BGS is looking for a skilled individual to work at a higher level of difficulty and responsibility in grounds, horticulture, and landscaping practices and procedures. This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday, 6:00am to 2:30pm. Duties are performed outdoors in sunshine, rain, and other inclement weather.

A valid drivers license is required for this position, and successful completion of multiple background checks is required.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed outdoors exclusively. Minimal inside shop and repair work. Work performed in sunshine and rain, other inclement weather and damp locations. Incumbents must be able to climb step ladders, and work from crouching and kneeling positions. Lift weights up to 60 pounds in the form of bagged much, fertilizer, soil. Manual dexterity is needed to operate equipment and use tools. Some evening or overtime work may be necessary. Position requires possession of a valid driver's license.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree or higher in horticulture.


High School diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years or more in gardening/landscaping procedures and practices.

Preferred Qualifications

Vocational courses, nursery or horticultural training.
