Overview

This position will assist the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department with land acquisitions and will work closely with the Land Acquisition Coordinator (LAC) on land acquisition conservation projects throughout Vermont using a variety of state and federal funding programs.  This position will support the land acquisition needs and priorities of both the Wildlife and Fish Divisions.  Work will include but is not limited to:

  • Provide administrative support to the LAC to manage, report on and renew multi-million-dollar grants which involves a great deal of organization to carefully track and manage budgets, legal documents, and grant reporting. 
  • Work with LAC and the wetland conservation and restoration steering committee to identify suitable projects for EPA funding.  The position will identify up to 8-12 projects each year and works with Department and agency leadership to set priorities and implement acquisitions.
  • Work with the Fish Division and the Riparian Lands Team to support additional wetland and streambank conservation and public access projects.
  • Work with private landowners and their attorneys as well as Department general council to complete complex real estate transactions.  This position may complete between as many as 8 projects each year resulting in the conservation of land that supports high priority wetland restoration and public access opportunities. 
  • Coordinate land records management for the Department with support from colleagues in the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation.  This involves organizing and summarizing large numbers of legal documents pertaining to real estate transactions.
  • Coordinate with partner organizations who may provide technical or financial support of conservation projects including but not limited to: (1) VHCB; (2) Vermont Land Trust; (3) The Nature Conservancy; (4) Ducks Unlimited; (5) National Wild Turkey Federation; (6) U.S Fish and Wildlife Service; (7) U.S. Forest Service; and (8) the Trust for Public Land among others.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in both an office and a field setting. Field work may require traversing rough terrain and bodies of water in all weather conditions. Duties may require work outside of normal office hours. Attendance may be required at a variety of public meetings, hearings, and seminars, where strong adversarial opinions and some hostility may be encountered. Private means of transportation may be required for necessary travel.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher in biology or a natural resources field AND one (1) year or more in a natural resources field. 

OR 

One (1) year or more as a Fish & Wildlife Scientist I with the State of Vermont
