Overview

This position is with the Sites Management Section (SMS) of the Waste Management and Prevention Division, Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation. The SMS is a high functioning technical program focused on protection of human health and the environment through the regulation and cleanup of hazardous material releases to the environment (soil, groundwater, surface water, indoor air, sediments). The SMS regulates and provides technical state oversight to the investigation and remediation of releases on all types of hazardous waste sites ranging from gas stations to Superfund Sites.

 

This is an entry-level position with the SMS. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and time management skills, be self-motivated and able to meet deadlines, be an effective team collaborator, be able to conduct regular site visits statewide, be comfortable walking in the woods and on undeveloped land and be able to communicate technical information effectively both orally and in writing.  Desirable knowledge and background include federal and state laws, rules, and policies applicable to hazardous sites, scientific principles including those of hydrogeology and geology, and contaminant properties including environmental behavior. Job duties include regular field visits to monitor compliance of required institutional and engineering controls at hazardous waste sites, program financial management assistance, electronic document management assistance, field visits to screen unregulated dumps, stakeholder compliance assistance recording closure documents in town land records and assisting with special projects as assigned.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in both a standard office setting and in the field, for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Heavy lifting and climbing may be required. Some work outside of regular work schedule may be necessary. Strong and conflicting opinions may be encountered.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering, a biological-life or physical science, math, or natural resources field.

 

OR

 

Associate's degree in engineering, a biological-life or physical science, math, or a natural resources field AND two (2) years or more at or above a technical level in an environmental or natural resources field.

 

OR

 

High School diploma or equivalent AND four (4) years or more of experience at or above a technical level in an environmental or natural resources.

 

OR

 

One (1) year or more as an Environmental Technician II.
