Title: Environmental Technician III - Dam Safety Program

Overview
The Department of Environmental Conservation, Water Investment Division, Dam Safety Program (DSP) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced engineering technician to join the regulatory and emergency action planning group within our team. Candidates with an educational and or working background in engineering, construction, or a technical field are preferred. Experience in dam safety including Emergency Action Planning (EAPs) and hydrologic and hydraulic modeling support for dams is highly desired.
A successful applicant will have the ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment where public safety is paramount, and the mission is to reduce risks to life, property, and the environment from dam incidents and failure through effective communication, education, regulation, and dam ownership. Candidates with experience in field work, data collection, construction, and emergency planning with good written and verbal communication skills and organizational skills will be given preference.
The DSP acts as both regulator and dam owner, regulating nearly 1,000 non-power, non-federal dams statewide and acts as the State's owner representative at 14 dams, including the three Winooski River Flood Control dams. Major duties include the development, maintenance, and review of EAPs, assistance with EAP training, hydrologic and hydraulic engineering support, dam hazard potential classification support, permitting support, dam safety rule compliance and enforcement support, field support including dam monitoring, data collection, survey, operation and maintenance, and inspection.
Staring salary is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Environmental Factors
Duties are performed in both a standard office setting and in the field, for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Heavy lifting and climbing may be required. Some work outside of regular work schedule may be necessary. Strong and conflicting opinions may be encountered.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in engineering, a biological-life or physical science, math, or natural resources field.
OR
Associate's degree in engineering, a biological-life or physical science, math, or a natural resources field AND two (2) years or more at or above a technical level in an environmental or natural resources field.
OR
High School diploma or equivalent AND four (4) years or more of experience at or above a technical level in an environmental or natural resources.
OR
One (1) year or more as an Environmental Technician II.
