Overview
Are you looking for a position that makes a difference in protecting Vermont's river? If so, you may be a good fit for the River Corridor Map Coordinator position in the Watershed Management Division.
This position is located within the Physical Science section of the Vermont Rivers Program. This position will coordinate and oversee all aspects of the Statewide River Corridor Map. As the River Corridor Map Coordinator, this position will work with the Physical Science Section and the River Corridor and Floodplain Protection Section to help meet the requirements of a Statewide River Corridor mapping and regulatory program under the new Flood Safety Act.
The official workstation will allow for telework and be headquartered in Montpelier Vermont and will require travel to other areas of the state as needed for site visits. The person in this position can potentially have a primarily telework or hybrid schedule, with occasional time in the office when required, especially during the initial training period.
Within the assigned region and statewide areas, this position is responsible for:
- Leading and overseeing the application of the Statewide River Corridor Map for the Rivers’ Physical Science’s Mapping team,
- Developing a robust process for river corridor map changes and revisions and provide related training to consultants and external partners,
- Ability to use river science to review current and background data to ensure river corridor mapping is accurate for regulatory and non-regulatory uses
- Using GIS technology to develop map revisions and tracking updates
- Oversee the integration of map changes into the Statewide River Corridor Map with revisions based on regulatory project review and new assessment data,
- Work with external partners to develop statutory in-fill development mapping processes,
- Providing technical assistance for Act 250 and new permitting under the Flood Safety Act, through use of river science and the river corridor map data to support decision making under the expanded Flood Hazard Area and River Corridor permitting program
- Attend field site visits for regulatory and non-regulatory river corridor map revision determinations
- Help prioritize watersheds for Stream Geomorphic Assessment updates needed to support improved river corridor mapping and regulation.
Qualified candidates should have:
- Working knowledge of River physical science data collection and use
- Work collaboratively with subject matter experts in the program
- Knowledge in geology and soil sciences
- Highly proficient in the application of ESRI ArcGIS mapping software
- Familiarity with regulatory programs and processes
- Ability to provide data synthesis and analysis, and use of GIS remote sensing data
- Demonstrate responsibility, organization, and independence
- Ability to communicate technical information, both orally and in writing, to a variety of audiences
Preferred skills include:
- Knowledge in geology and soil sciences
- Familiarity with regulatory programs and processes
- Reviewing and analyzing site plans, grading plans, and related engineering and surveying schematics, or reviewing stream geomorphic assessment data.
- Experience or awareness on the use of plain language to communicate complex concepts.
- Has experience or knowledge with aquatic habitat and biota.
- Knowledge or experience with compliance and enforcement law

Environmental Factors
Duties are largely performed in an office setting; however, some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree or higher in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, a social science, data science, or an environmental or natural resources field AND one (1) or more years of experience in a natural resources field.
OR
Bachelor's degree in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, a social science, data science, or an environmental or natural resources field AND two (2) or more years of experience in a natural resources field.
OR
Five (5) years or more of experience in an engineering, environmental, social science, data science, or natural resources field.
