Overview

The Department of Environmental Conservation seeks a Wetlands Ecologist to support wetland regulatory review of projects to ensure compliance with the Vermont Wetland Rules. This position primarily completes desktop mapping reviews of lands to locate protected wetlands and provide regulatory guidance to landowners and developers. This position communicates daily with landowners, municipalities, consultants, and government colleagues regarding wetland protections.
We seek a highly organized individual to review, prioritize, respond to, and document public inquiries. The candidate must be comfortable communicating with consultants and landowners and demonstrate excellent communication and technical writing skills. Preferred candidates have wetland-related experience and a basic knowledge of wetland ecology, and GIS. Aerial interpretation skills are desirable.
This work is performed under the general supervision of a District Wetlands Ecologist as part of a collaborative team of 8 staff. Teleworking is a possibility in consultation with the supervisor after an initial in-person training period.
This temporary position includes a 40-hour work week in the months of April -June, not exceeding 1280 hours in a calendar year with an end date of June 30th. Start date is late November to Early December.

Environmental Factors
Duties are largely performed in an office setting; however, some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or higher in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, a social science, data science, or an environmental or natural resources field.
OR
Three (3) years or more of experience in an engineering, environmental, social science, data science, or natural resources field.
