This a temporary position with a 40-hour work week in the growing season, not exceeding 1280 hours in a calendar year with a chance of another 1280 hours in 2025. Start date is late March to early April.

The Department of Environmental Conservation is seeking a Wetlands Ecologist to support wetland mapping and regulatory review of projects to ensure compliance with the Vermont Wetland Rules. This
position travels throughout the state to identify wetlands in the field, reviews development projects, performs jurisdictional determinations, and evaluates wetland permit applications. This position
communicates daily with landowners, municipalities, consultants, and government colleagues regarding wetland protections. This position also updates wetland mapping using ArcGIS.


The candidate must be comfortable communicating with consultants and landowners and demonstrate excellent communication and technical writing skills. Preferred candidates will have wetland related
experience and will have basic knowledge of wetland ecology, wetland delineation, and wetland functional assessment. GIS skills are needed.


This work is performed under the general supervision of a District Wetlands Ecologist as part of a collaborative team of 8 staff. Considerations for teleworking are a possibility in consultation with the

This position, Environmental Analyst III - Wetlands Ecologist - Temporary - Limited Service (Job Requisition #49426), is open to all State employees and external applicants. It is a Limited Service position, which is non-tenured and authorized for a specific period of time. Limited Service positions are established for specially funded projects or programs. This is a temporary position. Temporary work is typically for variable hours, and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, a social science, data science, or an environmental or natural resources field.


Three (3) years or more of experience in an engineering, environmental, social science, data science, or natural resources field.
