Title: Environmental Analyst III - District Wetlands Ecologist

Overview

The Department of Environmental Conservation is seeking a Wetlands Ecologist (Environmental Analyst III) to support regulatory review of projects and complaints to ensure compliance with the Vermont Wetland Rules. The right candidate must demonstrate responsibility, organization, and independence.
This position is responsible for:
- Traveling throughout the state to identify wetlands in the field, reviews development projects, investigates complaints, and evaluates wetland permit applications.
- Communicating daily with landowners, municipalities, consultants, and government colleagues regarding wetland protections. May involve interviewing respondents with compliance issues.
- Collecting relevant, meaningful evidence of wetland compliance issues such as photographic images, geospatial information, and interview notes.
- Documenting communications and findings in databases, reports, email, and field applications.
Preferred candidates will demonstrate the following:
- Excellent communication skills
- Technical writing skill
- Wetland related experience including knowledge of wetland ecology, delineation, and functional assessment
- Knowledge of enforcement law
This work is performed under the supervision of the Wetlands Program Manager as part of a collaborative team of 9 staff who primarily telework when not in the field. Considerations for teleworking on non-field days are a strong possibility in consultation with the supervisor.

Environmental Factors
Duties are largely performed in an office setting; however, some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or higher in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, a social science, data science, or an environmental or natural resources field.
OR
Three (3) years or more of experience in an engineering, environmental, social science, data science, or natural resources field.
