The Field Services Section of the Air Quality and Climate Division is recruiting for a Compliance Inspector position. The core duties of this position involves performing compliance inspections of industrial, commercial and institutional sources of air pollution, observing stack tests, performing complaint investigations, writing inspection and investigation reports, drafting warning letters and other enforcement documents.

Activities may involve climbing tall stacks and ladders and exposure to dust, chemicals and other pollutants in standard industrial settings. These duties involve communication and interaction with the regulated community, town officials, other regulatory bodies such as state agencies, US EPA and regional air pollution organizations, complainants and other members of the general public. Some interactions may be contentious. Duties may also include reviewing draft permits, reviewing compliance certifications and quarterly reports from industries, maintaining compliance databases and entering compliance data into the federal compliance tracking system. Other duties might involve the regulation of open burning and residential wood heating devices.

Environmental Factors

Duties are largely performed in an office setting; however, some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, or an environmental or natural resources field AND three (3) years or more at a professional level in an environmental or natural resources field.


Master's degree in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, or an environmental or natural resources field AND one (1) years or more at a professional level in an environmental or natural resources field.


Two (2) years or more or experience as an Environmental Analyst II.
