Overview

Vermont Department of Labor is adding a new person to the Administrative Services crew! If you enjoy cleaning and maintenance work and are interested in public service, this Custodian I position may be great for you.

 

General Overview:

Ordinary manual work involving custodial and housekeeping care of state offices, institutional buildings, and facilities. Duties involve varied cleaning and minor maintenance tasks following established routines in an assigned building or buildings. Incumbents may work as part of a custodial crew. Work is inspected while in progress or upon completion for adherence to instructions. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher-level employee.

 

Examples of Work:

  • Sweeps, mops, and vacuums floors.
  • Dusts and cleans offices or other work areas.
  • Cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies.
  • Unstops sinks and toilets.
  • Moves furniture and equipment when directed.
  • May deliver supplies and equipment.
  • May perform grounds keeping, snow removal, and recycling.
  • May be responsible for securing building.
  • Performs related work as required.

 

Duties are performed during assigned shifts at a state owned or leased building. Incumbents must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather. Good physical condition and ability to climb ladders and lift heavy weight and equipment (up to 40 lbs.) is necessary. Some overtime or evening work may be required.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to learn building custodial and simple building maintenance practices and procedures. Physical strength sufficient to perform job duties.
  • Ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn to operate building custodial equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively with fellow employees.
  • Ability to learn online training, time entry and e-mail.
  • Dependability under both supervised and unsupervised conditions.

 

This position requires a valid driver's license and vehicle for limited travel between work stations.

Special Requirements

Some positions in this class require valid driver's license, and own transportation for travel between work locations.
