The Agency of Transportation has an exciting opportunity for an independent thinking civil engineer looking to work in the construction field as an Inspector or Chief Inspector providing oversight on highway construction projects. In this position, you will be provided the opportunity to gain the skills necessary to advance into the Resident Engineer role. Construction Inspectors and Resident Engineers are exposed to a wide variety of construction projects ranging from paving, roadway, and bridge construction, to railroad work and even the occasional covered bridge restoration. While gaining valuable experience actively checking and documenting all aspects of transportation projects you will have an opportunity to collaborate with designers, contractors, state and local officials, and subject matter experts from all disciplines of engineering and construction. You will assist in the inspection of a specific project or multiple projects under the direction of a Chief Inspector or Resident Engineer. Or, based on experience, you may be assigned the Chief Inspector for the project(s). The official workstation is Construction Headquarters in Berlin and you may be assigned to work anywhere in the State. The work can be challenging and yet very rewarding with abundant opportunities for professional growth and career advancement.

Duties are largely performed in office and field settings. Incumbents should possess private means of transportation. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours may be required. Strong and conflicting opinions may be encountered.
Bachelor's degree in civil engineering.
OR
Bachelor's degree in any field of engineering AND EITHER one (1) year or more of professional civil engineering work OR one (1) year or more of technical experience performing engineering support tasks involved in the planning, surveying, design, inspection, construction, research and statistics, testing, investigation, and maintenance of various types of civil engineering projects or operations.
OR
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE).
OR
College senior in the final semester majoring in civil engineering.
