Overview
The Department of Buildings & General Services (BGS) is seeking a Security Officer for the historic Montpelier complex.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Regulate visitor access to State Office Buildings.
- Respond to and address safety and security concerns on State property.
- Deescalate tense situations.
- Monitor and address safety and security concerns at public gatherings on State property.
- Offer assistance to employees, clients, and visitors.
- Conduct security patrols in vehicles and on foot.
As of July 14, 2025, the step 1 rate for pay grade 18 will be $20.99 per hour.

Environmental Factors
Incumbents may be expected to work night and/or weekends shifts and be willing to work overtime, sometimes on short notice. Incumbents will frequently work alone and in adverse weather conditions. Tact is needed while conversing with state employees, contractors, and the public. Some exposure to potentially dangerous situations may be encountered. Standing or walking for extended periods will be necessary. Some travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation will be required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent AND two (2) or more years of experience in customer service AND one (1) or more year of experience in security or emergency services.
Special Requirements
Valid Driver's License is required.
Must pass a fingerprint supported security clearance prior to starting position.
CPR/AED and First Aid certification and all other BGS approved required training must be completed within the first nine months of employment.
