Overview

Buildings and General Services (BGS) at the State of Vermont has an entry level opportunity with room for growth as a BGS Maintenance Mechanic I at the Vermont historic Capital Complex. In this position, you will be maintaining the grounds surrounding the complex. You will be providing a service for our tenants and the public to properly maintaining the infrastructure of grounds. This position requires a valid driver's license and successful completion of multiple background checks.

 

This is a full-time position, and the schedule is Monday through Friday, 6am to 2:30pm.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed at state buildings and may include correctional facilities. Contact with inmates may be anticipated. Incumbents may encounter harassment or hostile behavior and must be able to respond in a calm and professional manner. Must be able to climb ladders, lift weights up to 75 pounds, and work in cramped, wet, or poorly ventilated areas. Plumbing repairs often entail exposure to raw sewage, for which protective clothing must be worn. May require possession of a valid driver's license. Work in all types of weather should be anticipated. May require emergency response to calls outside of regular work hours. Some potential for physical injury may be present.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years or more of experience in building construction, structural maintenance, or building repair and maintenance.

OR

Completion of a one (1) year vocational/technical training program in building trades, mechanical repair, industrial arts, or a closely related field AND one (1) year or more of experience in building construction, structural maintenance, or building repair and maintenance.

OR

State licensure at or above the journeyman level in any trade area.

OR

One (1) year of experience as a BGS Utility Mechanic.

OR

Four (4) years or more of experience in building construction, structural maintenance, or building repair and maintenance INCLUDING two (2) years or more at an independent level.

Special Requirements

Some positions in this class may require a valid driver's license and/or own transportation for travel between work sites.

A criminal record check and/or child abuse registry check may be required for some positions within this class based on the locations where duties are to be performed.
