Overview

The Department of Buildings and General Services (BGS) at the State of Vermont is seeking a Heat Plant Operator to join our Operations and Maintenance team. This position offers hands-on work with room for growth while serving the Capital District in Montpelier, which includes the State House and many historic buildings.

 

The Operator will primarily work at the Capitol Heat Plant in downtown Montpelier, operating and maintaining two biomass steam boilers, an oil-fired steam boiler, and related equipment. In addition to managing the heat plant systems, this role may assist with other maintenance duties such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, or lock repair. 

 

During the off-season, typically June through October, the schedule is Monday through Friday from 7am to 3:30pm. During heating season, October through May, the schedule shifts to third shift Monday through Wednesday from midnight to 8am, and first shift Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 4pm. A pay differential of $2.50 per hour applies to third shift hours. This position requires a valid driver’s license and successful completion of a background check.

Environmental Factors

Duties are typically performed in a heating plant facility and may involve varying work shifts. Need for overtime may occur. Operation and servicing of mechanical equipment and high-pressure systems poses some potential of on-the-job injury.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years or more of experience or training in a mechanical, building maintenance or equipment repair field.

OR

Successful completion of the BGS Boiler Room Training Program.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience related to heating equipment.

Special Requirements

A valid motor vehicle driver's license may be required.

Note: During non-heating seasons, incumbents of this class will assist in routine building/equipment, or grounds maintenance functions as assigned.
