The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets seeks an Agriculture Development Specialist I who will be responsible for leading the State of Vermont's participation in the Big E, an annual 17-day fair in West Springfield, MA. The State of Vermont, like each New England state, owns a building on the grounds of the Eastern States Exposition which opens and operates for the duration of the 17-day fair. This position will collaborate closely with other state agencies and departments, external partners, and state organizations to develop programming for the Vermont Building and ensure the details of the annual event are accounted for.

This position will lead the Agency's established involvement in the Big E fair while also developing new processes and protocols to strengthen and streamline the Agency's participation. This position will be responsible for managing many relationships with external partners and contractors as well as keeping track of all details that make the Big E event a success. This position will be responsible for recruitment of new vendors and contractors, communicating and contracting with existing vendors, writing requests for proposals, following up on paperwork and contracts, updating the onsite manual, organizing all logistics (such as tickets, dry storage, dead storage, refrigeration space), onsite management of the event, and all event follow up such as collection of commission and summary reporting. Roughly 20-25% of this position will require travel to West Springfield in preparation for the event, as well as onsite management of the Vermont Building during the Big E fair. Given the complex nature of this event, this position should be comfortable and able to adapt to last minute changes, problem solve quickly in the moment, and know how to deescalate stressful situations. In addition, this position must be a confident public speaker, highly organized, and have very strong attention to detail. 

This position will have ongoing engagement with agriculture and food-based businesses, industry stakeholders, nonprofit and public sector partners, policy makers, and consumers. Who May Apply

This position, Agriculture Development Specialist I - Temporary (Job Requisition #13703), is open to all State employees and external applicants. This is a temporary position. Temporary work is typically for variable hours, and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in a variety of settings, including open floorplan office, producer and market sites, and public events, project sites and potential hearing settings. Some in-state and limited regional, out-of-state travel is involved for which private reliable means of transportation must be available. Occasional public communication, both verbally and in writing is required. An incumbent must coordinate activities with other departmental staff and interact considerably with agricultural and land development business people, interest groups and the general public. Certain required activities may occur outside of normal office hours.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree AND one (1) year or more of experience at or above a technical level in agriculture, marketing, environmental conversation, communications, land use planning or another relevant field.
