Overview

The Vermont State Archives and Records Administration (VSARA) seeks an innovative, versatile, and service-oriented information professional to provide reference and research services to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders seeking access to, or information from, records preserved in the state archives. 

Overview:
The ideal candidate for this public-facing position has a background based in archives, information and computer science with political science or government history experience that includes legal research and demonstrated ability to assist in: (1) planning and leading projects and initiatives involving State archival records; (2) creating and delivering robust informational tools and resources designed to promote knowledge and understanding of Vermont through its laws and public records; and (3) preparing and presenting formal reports and recommendations on a broad range of subject matters. 

What Will You Do?: 
The Government Archives and Information Specialist is the primary contact for VSARA's research and reference services, which includes providing onsite access to State archival records through our public reference room. At the Specialist II level, you will work under the general supervision of a senior team member and perform specific functions related to VSARA's reference and research services by:

  • Coordinating and processing requests for records in the state archives according to the Vermont Public Records Act.
  • Adhering to VSARA's internal controls for providing timely, effective, and accurate reference and research services to stakeholders and for making recommendations to address improvement or planning needs. 
  • Collaborating with external and internal stakeholders to develop recommendations on policies, tools, and resources to promote the use of, and access to, State archival records, including for the purposes of strategically fulfilling the mission-critical informational needs of external and internal stakeholders. 
  • Providing full consultative and outreach services, including guidance on record schedules, laws and regulations, policies and guidelines, and professional archival standards and best practices. 
  • Independently managing assigned projects and initiatives related to State archival records, regardless of format.
  • Responding to difficult or complex situations and problems, and independently determining when concerns need to be referred for further assistance or action. 

This position is classified as a Records and Information Management (RIM) Specialist II by the Department of Human Resources and is being recruited at three levels.  You must apply to each level for consideration.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed in a standard office setting, but some travel may be required for which private means of transportation should be available. May be required to lift boxes 20 to 30 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree or higher in archives, library, or information science or in the broader information management field AND two (2) years or more of professional RIM work at the RIM Specialist I level or equivalent.
OR
Professional designation of (or eligibility for) Certified Records Manager (CRM) or Certified Records Analyst (CRA) by the Institute of Certified Records Managers (ICRM) AND two (2) years or more of professional RIM work at the RIM Specialist I level or an equivalent position.
