The Vermont Department of Health Middlebury District Office has a dynamic opportunity for an enthusiastic and organized nurse who is passionate about improving community health.  The right candidate will be part of an inter-disciplinary team of public health professionals that is focused on prevention and fostering systems change to make a positive impact on the health and well-being of communities in Addison County, Vermont. 

Our Registered Nurses work in a variety of community health areas; primary programmatic content of focus for the right candidate will be: Maternal Child Health and Immunizations with a secondary focus on Epidemiology. All Department of Health employees participate in emergency preparedness planning and operation.

Duties may include, but are not limited to: 
1.    Developing and maintaining internal and external collaboration, communication and partnerships to improve systems of care and health outcomes for families and children. 
2.    Conducting quality improvement activities with medical practices to increase immunization rates in Addison County. Managing vaccine inventory and conducting monthly immunization clinics. 
3.    Infectious Disease case investigations, tracking of reportable diseases, providing education and collaborating with VDH Central office experts, medical practices and hospital IP’s. 
4.    Provide support and collaborate with VDH Central office experts, medical practices and local office staff on maternal child health and community level disease prevention.
5.    Competence in clinical skills such as venipunctures, tuberculin skin testing and vaccinations.

Environmental Factors

Duties primarily performed in a standard office setting. Work may be performed in clinic settings and possibly client homes. Exposure to communicable diseases and other stressful situations may occur. Private means of transportation is required. May be required to work evenings, weekends and 12 hour shifts.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in nursing AND five (5) years or more of professional nursing experience INCLUDING three (3) or more years in public health or community health nursing*.


Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) AND three (3) or more years in public health or community health nursing*.

Possession of, or eligibility for, licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Vermont

*Community Health Nursing is defined as school nursing, home health nursing, home visiting nurses and community nurse health educators.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

Special Requirements

Must maintain Vermont licensure as a Registered Nurse as a condition of employment.
