Overview

Are you passionate about the environment and looking for a career that aligns your professional skills with your values? If you are a natural communicator, a keen observer, and someone who wants to make a tangible difference in the health of our communities, we invite you to join the Environmental Compliance team at the Agency of Natural Resources.

We are seeking an Environmental Enforcement Officer who balances technical expertise with a collaborative, restorative approach to environmental protection. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys the autonomy of the field but values the impact of community-focused work.

The Role: A Balance of Science and Stewardship
In this position, you aren't just enforcing regulations; you are a steward of Vermont's natural resources. You will work across the Agency's regulatory programs, ensuring that our air, land, and water are treated with respect. You'll be the bridge between environmental science and the law, working to find solutions that restore and protect Vermont's beautiful landscape.

What Your Impact Will Look Like

  • Advocating for the Environment: Review and prioritize citizen concerns, ensuring the community's voice is heard and acted upon.
  • Problem-Solving & Negotiation: Use your interpersonal skills to negotiate for viable solutions and long-term compliance.
  • Restoring the Landscape: When violations occur, you'll work with environmental program experts to assess the damage and prescribe the remedial efforts needed to bring the environment back to a healthy state.
  • Investigative Excellence: Conduct thoughtful, thorough investigations. You'll gather evidence, interview witnesses, and alleged violators, and produce clear reports that support the legal integrity of our mission.
  • Collaborative Partnership: Work alongside a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and legal experts to prepare for court actions and provide meaningful testimony.

Is This You?  We are looking for a candidate who brings a thoughtful, detail-oriented perspective to our enforcement team.

  • Effective Communicator: You can navigate difficult conversations with a firm yet fair hand, building effective working relationships even in challenging situations.
  • Analytical Mind: You have a gift for gathering information and accurately interpreting evidence to gain accurate results.
  • Self-Directed & Reliable: You enjoy the independence of managing your own schedule and making autonomous decisions in the field.
  • Nature-Driven: You're comfortable being outdoors, whether that's traversing a forest, assessing a stream, or accessing a remote investigation.

The Practical Details

  • Home-Based with a Field Focus: This position is home-based, providing you with the flexibility of a remote administrative setup. However, the heart of this role is in the field, allowing for a balanced mix of in-office and time in Vermont's diverse landscapes conducting investigations and site visits.
  • Technical Growth: You'll gain and apply knowledge in fascinating areas like geology, hydrology, and environmental law.
  • Supportive Environment: Work as part of a high achieving, mission driven team that values integrity and environmental health.

Knowledge & Skills, We Value

  • Experience with engineering, geology, hydrology, and other technical areas of environmental protection.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Experience working independently and making autonomous decisions.
  • Ability to stay organized while managing multiple investigations.
  • Experience with investigatory principles and techniques, including interviewing and interrogation techniques
  • Familiarity of rules concerning gathering, analyzing, interpreting and the preservation of evidence and of search and seizure laws.
  • Working knowledge of state and federal statutes, regulations, and policies on environmental protection.
