Overview

If spending your summer and fall collecting water quality samples on Lake Champlain and in its tributaries sounds exciting to you, then you may be a good fit for the Lake Champlain Long-Term Monitoring Assistant position! The VT Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Lake Champlain Long-Term Water Quality and Biological Monitoring Program conducts monitoring each year in support of the Lake Champlain Phosphorus TMDL and DEC management goals in the Champlain watershed.

The monitoring assistant will conduct field sampling, under the oversight of a senior field technician, from both lake and river locations, from approximately May through November. Fifteen lake sites are visited each summer at two-week intervals. Fourteen river mouths are sampled during major rain events. Additionally, the field team collects water samples in support of the Champlain Cyanobacteria monitoring program and investigates reported blooms or other events of concern. Weather-permitting, boat-based field sampling will be the major activity undertaken by the Monitoring Assistant. Additional duties involve logging samples into the Lab Management System at the Vermont Agriculture and Environmental Laboratory located in Randolph at Vermont Technical College, sampling for zebra mussel veligers at selected inland lakes, equipment maintenance, and data management.

The Monitoring Assistant may also be involved in other Lakes and Ponds projects around the Basin. The successful candidate must be comfortable in small boats on open water, comfortable working occasionally in inclement weather, and able to lift heavy gear or coolers filled with water samples.
