Overview

The Vermont Department of Health Laboratory is seeking an individual to perform clinical testing for the 2019 novel Coronavirus by real-time RT-PCR.  This position may also perform testing in other areas of the laboratory, such as environmental testing for pathogens in food samples.  This position is a grant funded position for a four year duration with a possible extension.

 

This limited service position expires on 07/31/2024.

AHS BACKGROUND CHECKS:  Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.  In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.

Environmental Factors

Must be able to work in laboratory conditions with exposure to biohazards by handling samples that either is a bodily fluid or may be contaminated with bodily fluid(s) or highly infectious pathogens. May undergo a medical evaluation and fit testing for respirator use. Must be willing to be called upon with short notice (sometimes only hours) to respond to a public health emergency or natural disaster affecting a large segment of the Vermont population and able to accurately analyze samples in such a short timeframe. May need to explain laboratory data and testing to the general public, explain what the VDHL can do and to educate them regarding public health science.

Work requires some travel and incumbents should possess a valid Vermont operator's license.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in microbiology, molecular microbiology or a related biological science.

OR

Master's degree in microbiology, molecular microbiology, biology, physical science or a closely related field AND one (1) year or more of professional level microbiological, molecular or biological laboratory experience in a public health, clinical or related laboratory setting.

OR

Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, physical science or a closely related field INCLUDING 18 credit hours in microbiology with laboratory course work and two (2) mathematics courses AND three (3) years or more of professional level microbiological, molecular or biological laboratory experience in a public health, clinical or related laboratory setting.

OR

One (1) year or more of experience as a Public Health Laboratory Scientist II, A/C Microbiology.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred candidates will possess three or more years of experience performing real-time RT-PCR molecular assays.  Broad knowledge of classical microbiology and molecular procedures, instrument analysis techniques, safety, and quality assurance are highly desirable for this position, as is experience with a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). The ideal candidate is a self-motivated, results-oriented individual with a minimum of 3 years of experience performing clinical or environmental testing in a clinical or public health laboratory setting.

•    knowledge of policies, processes, and procedures related to corrective and preventive actions. 
•    the ability to communicate orally and in writing.
•    ability to work in accordance with applicable regulatory and laboratory accreditation requirements (CLIA, ISO 17025).
•    Broad knowledge of classical microbiology principles and laboratory methods for isolating and identifying pathogenic microorganisms using traditional biochemical and microscopic analyses.
•    Broad knowledge of quality assurance systems, including proficiency testing and quality control.
•    Ability to research, develop, verify, and implement procedures/methods.
