The Vermont Department of Health is recruiting for a Nurse with infectious disease epidemiology experience for a key position in the Infectious Disease Epidemiology section of the Division of Health Surveillance. This position is the Healthcare-Associated Infection (HAI) Coordinator. The incumbent serves as the coordinator of all HAI-related activities within the Infectious Disease Epidemiology section. This position is limited service and set to end on 07/31/2025.


This position allows for flexibility in remote work options.

Examples of Work

1.     Coordinate the healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance prevention (H.A.R.P.) Program activities, including the following:
•    Advancing the detection of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and antimicrobial resistance;
•    Advancing the response to and containment of HAIs and antimicrobial resistance
•    Supporting H.A.R.P. Program infrastructure

•    Assisting the H.A.R.P. Program Director with revisions of the State HAI Plan as appropriate.
•    Using the State HAI Plan to prioritize activities (in addition to direction from the HAI Program Director).
•    Assisting the H.A.R.P. Program Director in writing the annual CDC HAI grant progress report and application narratives.
•    In consultation with supervisor, developing agendas for, schedule conference calls for, and write the minutes/summary of each Advisory Committee quarterly call/meeting (3 quarterly calls, one meeting/year)
•    Participating in and subsequently leading Infection Control Assessment and Response (ICAR) visits (in-person or remote/tele-ICAR) in long-term care facilities, assisted living facilities, retirement communities, residential care homes, therapeutic community residences, or other congregate settings (e.g., homeless shelters)


2.     Coordinate the Vermont Multidrug-Resistant Organism (MDRO) Prevention Collaborative (renamed: C-PHAR – see below).
•    Implementing the collaborative called C-PHAR “Collaborative for Prevention of Healthcare Associated Infections and Antibiotic Resistance“.
o    Collaborating with Epi Designees in scheduling quarterly C-PHAR cluster meetings
o    Collaborating with Epi Designees to organize and facilitate quarterly C-PHAR cluster meetings with content provided by you.
o    In consultation with supervisor, developing agendas and presentations for quarterly C-PHAR cluster meetings.
o    Attending quarterly C-PHAR cluster meetings in person whenever possible. 


3.    Participate in and support general Infectious Disease Epidemiology Program activities, such as:
o    Conducting surveillance on various reportable infectious diseases
o    Analyzing and interpreting disease surveillance data and create reports
o    Creating questionnaires and other data collection tools for data gathering operations
o    Participating in preparedness and all-hazards epidemiology efforts
o    Preparing and presenting material to the general public and health professionals 
o    Performing various other support duties including conducting disease investigations, assisting with outbreak response efforts and serving as on-call epidemiologist
o    Maintaining knowledge of current trends and developments in the field
o    Acting as a Duty Officer on some weekdays and weekends to provide afterhours consultation for urgent and emergent epidemiology situations. 
4.    Co-lead the Healthcare-Associated Outbreak Prevention and Response (HOPR) Team of the Vermont Department of Health’s COVID-19 response.

Environmental Factors

Duties are primarily performed in an office setting. Some work may be performed in clinic settings, possibly client homes, and facilities. Availability to respond to critical health care issues. Incumbents may be exposed to infectious diseases and blood borne pathogens and stressful situations. There may be a potential for exposure to litigation. Duties may include travel and use of personal vehicle. May be required to work evenings, weekends and 12 hour shifts.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of, or eligibility for, licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Vermont AND five (5) years or more of professional nursing experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

NOTE: Must maintain Vermont licensure as a Registered Nurse as a condition of employment.

Master of Public Health or comparable background in infectious disease epidemiology.

The person in this position would preferably have:
•    Possess or be willing to pursue CIC (Certification in Infection Control) training and certification.
•    Strong background in epidemiology 
•    Strong leadership and communication skills 
•    Experience with program management and the ability to assess rapidly evolving situations, anticipate complex needs and problem solve
•    Ability to clearly and concisely present ideas verbally and in writing
•    Ability to balance, prioritize, and organize multiple tasks
•    Ability to synthesize current literature and guidelines, evaluate current practices, and make public health recommendations
•    Ability to use NBS and other databases
