Overview
Complex, primarily felony criminal investigation work for the Office of the Defender General
Description
Provides investigations and technical services in all areas related to indigent clients. Duties are performed with a high degree of independence, but require excellent teamwork with attorneys and other staff members. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Public Defender and is reviewed by the Defender General or his/her designee. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Reviewing and analyzing cases to help develop defense plans.
- Putting together release plans for clients with new cases, who are being held in jail on high cash bail, or who are being held without bail, and who need residences and/or responsible adults who will be approved by the court for them to be released.
- Extensive legwork locating and interviewing clients and witnesses.
- Reviewing and organizing discovery, which, in felony cases, can be voluminous.
- Helping to find alternative placements for incarcerated clients, limiting incarceration, and when they are struggling with addiction, helping to assist them in treatment, whether residential or outpatient.
- Assisting with preparation of and providing support during evidentiary hearings, trials, & sentencing hearings: including locating and subpoenaing witnesses; helping to get them to court; managing clients and witnesses during hearings; presenting evidence and providing tech support during hearings.
Compensation
Minimum: $29.15 Maximum: $45.58
The salary range reflects the minimum rate and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.
Minimum Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree. Experience: Four years of professional investigation work, or experience as required by the Defender General. Additional work experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a six month per semester basis. Knowledge of Vermont’s criminal justice system is ideal. Work location may be flexible because this is a position that requires field work, but an applicant must be willing to travel to facilities throughout the state on a regular basis.
