The Geotechnical Section at VTrans has an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated and energetic technical professional looking to work in the area of materials engineering. The Unbound Materials Unit within the Geotechnical Section is looking for a technically oriented individual to be the Agency's subject matter expert in unbound materials, including natural mineral aggregates and recycled or manufactured materials for use as aggregates.


Duties specific to this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Characterizing unbound materials, utilizing research, lab tests, and field studies 
  • Designing and implementing forensic investigations into material properties and failures
  • Evaluating new and recycled materials for use as aggregates
  • Crafting and revising technical material specifications
  • Administering the Agency's aggregate source program
  • Supervising a team of specialists providing field and lab services on construction projects


The ideal candidate for this position is someone who enjoys operating both independently and as part of a team, identifying problems and finding solutions, and working in the field, lab, and office environments. 


Bachelor's degrees in engineering, geology, materials, and other related technical fields are encouraged to apply for this position.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in both office and field settings for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND six (6) years of engineering experience.  
Licensure as a Professional Engineer AND five (5) years of engineering experience.
Associates degree in degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND eight (8) years of engineering experience INCLUDING licensure as an Engineer Intern.
