Overview

The Materials Section at the Vermont Agency of Transportation is hiring a Civil Engineer to serve as Pavement Design Engineer. This is a new position within the Bituminous Material Unit, and will work closely with management to develop and implement the Pavement Materials recommendation process, and lead the scoping and design efforts on Agency paving projects. As the Pavement Design Engineer, this position collaborates closely with personnel in the Asset Management, Roadway Design, and Construction teams at the Agency.


Major job duties of this position will include:

  • Coordinate and conduct pavement condition and structural evaluations
  • Pavement thickness design
  • Drafting of materials recommendations
  • Post-Construction pavement evaluation and failure investigations
  • Pavement profiler operation and profile surface design

 

The ideal candidate enjoys problem solving, working both independently and as part of a team, spending time in both the field and office environments, and has excellent verbal and written communication skills. This position reports to the Construction and Materials Bureau Headquarters in Berlin, VT, and some remote work will be possible.

Class Definition

Engineering work at a skilled level for the Agency of Transportation. Duties involve design, technical support, and construction oversight of moderately complex engineering projects under minimal supervision. Independently and effectively design, develop, and oversee transportation plans and specifications through their skilled knowledge of disciplines including, but not limited to, Roadway, Traffic, Structural, Hydraulic, Geotechnical, Environmental, Materials, and Construction Management.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in both office and field settings for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND four (4) years of engineering experience. 
OR
Associates degree in civil engineering, construction management, architectural engineering, or related technical field AND six (6) years of engineering experience INCLUDING licensure as an Engineer Intern.
